The Ascension Parish Clerk of Court serves as the Chief Elections Officer for all elections held in the Parish. The Elections Department, in coordination with the Ascension Parish Board of Election Supervisors, oversees every aspect of the election process within Ascension Parish. The department qualifies candidates for local offices, while the Louisiana Secretary of State qualifies candidates for state offices.
The Elections Department is responsible for training Commissioners and Commissioners-in-Charge; issuing all required election notices; coordinating voting machine delivery and pickup; and addressing issues that arise on Election Day. Following an election, the department verifies results, reconciles voting machine data, tabulates totals, and prepares election payroll.
The Clerk of Court chairs the Parish Board of Election Supervisors, which meets before, during, and after each election. The Board randomly selects Commissioners to staff polling locations, counts absentee ballots, certifies official election results, and annually appoints Commissioners-in-Charge for each precinct.
